Phop Phra
Community
Field

PlayOnside work together with Estudio Cavernas and Colabora Birmania to develop a Community Field in Phop Phra.

Project Description

PlayOnside has been working with the Migrant Schools in Phop Phra for several years, and both the children and the community has shown a lot of enthusiasm and willingness to learn through football. Phop Phra is a rural agricultural community around 40 kilometers south from Mae Sot along the Thai/Burma border, and migrants workers are working on the rice fields and the banana plantations in the region. Most of them are very poor and the children growing up in this area face different challenges than the children growing up in Mae Sot. None of the schools have a playground or an space for outdoor activities, so in 2018 PlayOnside rented one of the rice fields adjacent to one of the Learning Centers. Before investing anything into the project we wanted to see the long-term commitment of the schools. After one year of great collaboration, the time was ready to improve the facilities.

In collaboration with our partners, Estudio Cavernas and Colabora Birmania we develop a community playground football field, garden and toilets, to run different activities on a regular basis. The sport compound is divided between the different schools, so everyone has access to the ground.

During the construction and prior the COVID-19 pandemic, PlayOnside ran football training on a daily basis, activating hundreds of children. Now, due to regulations, all training have been cancelled, but it has given us the time to finish the construction of the project.

For the long-term, PlayOnside have great expectations for this project. To provide quality football and life skills training in this area has been a goal for the organization for a long time. Now we have the facilities needed to do so, and PlayOnside as an organizations is bigger and stronger than ever before. That means we have the tools and resources to play an important part of the educational progress of the migrant children of Phop Phra.

To further develop the area, we aim to plant a ecological community  garden behind the new building. This will provide Rose Field Migrant Learning Center with access to free, healthy and nutritious vegetables and fruits for the around 100 children attending this learning center. As the school also have kindergarten and nursery, we will further extend and expand the playground with new toys and equipment.

“PlayOnside has worked with the migrant learning centers in Phop Phra for several years. Over the years we have observed a lack of space for the children to do any type of fun games or activities. The new football field with good facilities will be of major benefit for the around 1000 children going to school in this area.”
